How to Charge a UPS Power Supply Correctly

Battery Knowledge · 2021-06-19

UPS power plays an important role in work and daily life — it is usually the backup power supply of data centers, hospitals, factories and offices. The batteries inside the UPS are only as good as the charging regimen they receive.

Use a temperature-compensated, constant-voltage (float/boost) charger matched to the battery chemistry. For VRLA, typical float voltage is around 2.25–2.30 V/cell at 20°C; for LiFePO4 follow the BMS-specified profile. Avoid chronic under- or over-charging, both of which shorten life.

Schedule periodic capacity tests and keep ambient temperature near 20–25°C. A correctly charged and maintained UPS battery bank is the difference between a graceful failover and a costly outage.
